Camino Camp at EKU

EKU will host its first ever summer camp specifically for Latino/a students! Students will enjoy five days on campus where they will experience what life is like in the residence halls, meet professors, attend mock college classes, receive information on how to apply and receive financial aid, participate in recreational activities and bond with their peers. This camp is for high school students of all grade levels, with an emphasis on rising 11th and 12th graders. The camp will take place June 17- June 21, 2018. DECA Attends Regional Conference DECA Regional Conference

Somerset High School DECA Students attended the DECA Regional Conference on Friday, February 9th.  

Science Rocks at SHS Science Rocks

Gear Up hosted Jason Lindsay with Hooked On Science for “Science Rocks” at SHS.   Lindsay, a native of Paducah, Kentucky, is a former meteorologist who has taken his passion for bringing science to students around the Commonwealth and across America and Canada.   His goal is to show students that science is fun and interesting in hopes of sparking interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers and a lifelong passion for learning. 

SCC Preview Day SCC Diversity Day

The Office of Cultural Diversity at Somerset Community College hosted minority students to a Preview Day at SCC.  SHS seniors and Senior Counselor David Akin visited the Physical Therapist Assistant program, the 3D printing facility, and enjoyed the lunch provided by the college.

The Princess Prom Project Project Princess Prom

The Princess Prom Project will be held at First Baptist Church on March 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students must sign up with Mrs. Jennifer Johnson in the Youth Service Center in order to participate.  

Murray State University’s Commonwealth Honors Academy

Murray State University’s Commonwealth Honors Academy will be held June 9 to June 30, 2018. The Academy brings together 120 rising high school seniors for three weeks in an interdisciplinary living-learning environment. Upon completion of the academy, students will: Receive 6 hours of university studies credit; have the opportunity to take an additional six hours of tuition-free university courses at MSU during their senior year; be awarded a four-year $2,000 renewable housing/leadership scholarship to attend MSU. Students must have an ACT composite of 25 (or SAT,PSAT equivalent) and a minimum 3.5 GPA. Applications and additional information can be found at http://www.murraystate.edu/cha. The student application deadline is March 1, 2018.

2018 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.

Applications for the 2018 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., are now being accepted by South Ky RECC. Competition for the all-expense paid trip is open to high school juniors, between the ages of 16 and 18, whose parent(s) or guardians(s) receive electric service at their primary residence from SKRECC. Students must complete a typed essay of 500 words on the subject “Why I want to represent South Kentucky RECC in Washington, D.C.” All essays and a completed application form must be returned to the guidance counselor of each school or SKRECC Member Service Centers by the end of the work day on March 2, 2018. Twenty-four semifinalists will be selected for a one-day trip to Frankfort, Kentucky on March 27, for the Frankfort Rural Electric Youth Tour. From that group, up to 12 will be chosen to go to Washington, D.C. for the Rural Electric Youth Tour, June 8-15. In D.C., students will tour national landmarks and learn more about how the United States government works. Applications can be picked up in the SHS Counseling Office.

Our district has selected a Student Insurance option from K&K Insurance Group to make reliable coverage available to parents. If you do not have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expense "gaps" caused by deductibles and co-pays.
